Mozart Great Mass in C minor + John Corigliano Fern Hill

November 10, 2025 7:00 pm

Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage at Carnegie Hall

John Corigliano: Fern Hill
Mozart: Great Mass in C minor, K. 427

Jennifer Zetlan soprano
Samantha Hankey mezzo-soprano
Alex Richardson tenor
Joseph Parrish bass-baritone

This program pairs two powerful choral works separated by centuries but united by their expressive depth and emotional reach. John Corigliano’s Fern Hill, composed in 1960 and revised in 1999, sets the evocative early poem by Dylan Thomas. In contrast, the second half presents Mozart’s monumental Mass in C minor, K. 427, often referred to as the “Great” Mass. Composed in 1782–83 as a deeply personal vow following his marriage to Constanze Weber, the work remains unfinished yet stands among Mozart’s most ambitious sacred compositions and one of the most compelling sacred works of the Classical era.

Handel Alexander's Feast

May 11, 2026 8:00 pm

Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage at Carnegie Hall

Handel: Alexander’s Feast

Lauren Snouffer soprano
Richard Pittsinger tenor
Sidney Outlaw baritone

We close our season with a rare performance of George Frideric Handel’s Alexander’s Feast, composed in 1736. An ode to the power of music, OSNY last performed the work in 1878, and it has only been presented in its entirety at Carnegie Hall once before—in 1959! Based on a poem by John Dryden, the work celebrates the feast held by Alexander the Great in honor of his conquest of Persia, where the court musician Timotheus uses music to stir the conqueror’s emotions—moving him from joy to sorrow, to love, and finally to vengeance. The grand choral writing offers moments of both intimacy and majesty, culminating in a final chorus that exalts Saint Cecilia, patron saint of music.
